Every Pet Deserves a Second Chance

Every month, through FOMA’s Virtual Foster Program, we partner with a trusted rescue to share the stories of dogs and cats in urgent need of safe, loving homes. Each animal remains listed here until they find their forever family—because every single one matters.

Good with: Children, large-breed dogs
Not suitable for: Cats or small dogs
Ideal home: Active family, outdoor lifestyle, room to play

About Elena
Elena is a joyful, rough-and-tumble girl who lives for adventure. She loves long walks, splashing in the water, and chasing toys—anything that keeps her moving and engaged. Her affectionate, protective nature makes her a wonderful companion for families, especially those with children she can dote on.

She thrives around large dogs who can match her spirited play style, but she isn’t a fit for homes with cats or small dogs due to her prey drive. With the right family, Elena would blossom into a loyal, lively partner for years to come.

The work continues far beyond any single dog. This section highlights the organizations we’ve been walking alongside—each one caring for many animals who are still waiting for safety, healing, and a home of their own.

  • Miami-Dade County, FL

The Humane Society of Greater Miami has been caring for homeless animals in Miami-Dade County since 1936. Every day, more than 400 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens receive compassionate care at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach. Each animal is given a true second chance—tender care, nutritious meals, safety, and medical support for as long as they need until the right family arrives.

The organization works with dedication to build a kinder, more responsible community for both pets and people. Through education programs, outreach, and compassionate guidance, they inspire residents to care for animals with the respect and kindness they deserve.

Their preventive veterinary clinic in North Miami Beach plays a vital role in reducing overpopulation, performing thousands of sterilization surgeries each year. They also support families experiencing financial hardship by offering low-cost and free vaccines and spay/neuter services.

Every animal under their care is safe from the threat of euthanasia while waiting for adoption. More than 2,000 pets each year find loving homes across South Florida. Before adoption, each animal is fully evaluated, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered, and families receive personal guidance to help them make the perfect match.

Staff and volunteers travel throughout the community—schools, libraries, organizations, and clubs—to teach responsible pet ownership, kindness to animals, and the importance of the human–animal bond. Their outreach reaches more than 6,000 children and adults a year, shaping a more compassionate future.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is a nonprofit organization supported entirely by donations, grants, and community fundraising. Their work continues because the community believes in it.

  • Founded in honor of a life that inspired a mission.

The heart of this rescue began with one dog: Mr. Bones. After years of suffering, he was found on NYC’s Urgent List in July 2012—ragged, smiling, and only hours from euthanasia. He carried deep wounds, trauma, and a lifetime of neglect, yet his resilience was extraordinary. Through months of medical treatment, surgeries, and slow healing, Mr. Bones transformed into a soul who fostered more than 65 puppies and showed a depth of emotional intelligence that inspired an entire movement.

His journey—both the victories and the challenges—led founder Elizabeth “Elli” Frank to create Mr. Bones & Co., an organization built from compassion, responsibility, and the belief that every animal deserves safety, patience, and a chance to start again.

Today, the rescue works to create a kinder, more just community for both pets and people. They offer programs that educate, uplift, and inspire responsible pet ownership, and they continually advocate for animals who have nowhere else to turn.
